Macallen Armourers replicas of historic Basket Hilted swords include the Traditional Scottish Officers broadsword and backsword, an ornate Walter Allen broadsword and backsword and the half basket Mortuary backsword and broadsword. All these swords were used around the 1625 to 1775 period and are authentic to the originals. You have a choice of blades: they can be Backed (single edged) with a length of 36" or Broadbladed (double edged) with a blade length of 32". All basket hilted swords weigh around 3 lbs and can be supplied with either a steel or polished brass basket. These fine reproduction Traditional Basket Hilts by Iain Macallen, a true Master Armourer, whose high level of skill and craftsmanship has been passed through the Allen family from father to son for many generations.

The Allen family Armourers, from the Sterling area of Scotland, in the 16th century became famous for their Basket Hilted swords. These weapons were ornate, beautifully designed, wonderfully balanced and showed the true skill and craftsmanship of the times. Many of these swords are still on display in museums, castles and family armouries throughout Britain. Reference books of edged weapons feature Macallen swords under the names of Walter, Stewart or John Allen.

These two historic swords by Walter Allen made between 1735 and 1760 are fine examples of his work. The sword on the left has a 38.5 inch blade and the sword pictured right has a shorter 32.75 inch blade. Replicas of these swords are available to special order and will be handmade by Iain Macallen.
